The spirit of unity, camaraderie and service to the nation took centre stage in Kaduna as the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Alumni Association, Kaduna Branch, held a get-together bringing together distinguished graduates from different walks of life.
The gathering, held at the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation Hall, Kaduna, was organised under the leadership of Engr Abubakar G. Umar, FNSE, and provided an opportunity for members to reconnect, reflect on their shared heritage and renew their commitment to the ideals of their alma mater.
The event celebrated the values of unity, civility, camaraderie and nationhood which, according to speakers, have continued to shape generations of graduates of ABU—one of Africa’s foremost universities.
Chairman of the occasion, Justice Ishaq U. Bello, PhD, OFR (Rtd), commended the initiative behind the get-together, describing it as an opportunity for members to strengthen their bonds and contribute meaningfully to the development of the university.
He called for renewed commitment among alumni towards improving existing facilities and supporting initiatives that would enhance the learning environment at ABU.
The Royal Father of the Day, His Royal Highness, Engr. Suleiman Umaru Lere, FNSE, applauded ABU for its contribution to human capital development.
He highlighted the quality and quantity of manpower produced by the university over the years, noting its significant contribution to Nigeria’s economy and the global workforce.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. William Barnabas Qurix, OFR, FNIA, Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Applied Sciences (FUAS), Kachia, took participants down memory lane, reflecting on the spirit of unity inherited by generations of ABU graduates.
He challenged the alumni association to preserve and strengthen that legacy for succeeding generations.
Prof. Qurix also highlighted areas where, in his assessment, the university management may have fallen short, stressing the role the alumni association could play in promoting mutual understanding, inclusiveness, justice and equity, particularly in matters relating to leadership recruitment.
ABU VC Commends Kaduna Government
The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, commended the intervention of the Kaduna State Government in the construction of road networks within the university.
He also urged members of the alumni association to intensify their efforts in mentoring one another, providing support and building stronger networks capable of contributing to the advancement of both the institution and society.
Uba Sani Honoured for Support to ABU
A major highlight of the gathering was the presentation of an award to the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, CON ably represented by his Deputy, in recognition of his commitment to the growth and development of Ahmadu Bello University.
The award was presented by the President of the ABU Alumni Association Worldwide, Mal. Adamu Mamman Kontagora.
The get-together ultimately served as more than a reunion. It became a platform for reflection, recognition and renewed commitment to preserving the legacy of Ahmadu Bello University while strengthening the bonds among its alumni.
