“Justice Must Go Beyond Promises” — Gov. Uba Sani Faces Public Expectation for Action

The condolence visit by Uba Sani to the family of the late Ummulkhairi was more than a ceremonial appearance—it was a moment that carried the weight of public expectation.
During the visit, the governor assured the bereaved family of justice, pledged support for the husband and children left behind, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The promises reflected the compassion expected of leadership in moments of grief and tragedy.
However, history has shown that the true test of leadership is not in the assurances given during difficult times, but in the actions that follow them.
Governor Sani stated that the 41 suspects already facing trial would be prosecuted, while efforts would continue to apprehend others still at large.
He also pledged investigations into police officers allegedly linked to the crime or any attempt to obstruct justice.
These commitments have raised public expectations and placed greater emphasis on the need for transparent investigations and an impartial judicial process.
The death of Ummulkhairi has shaken not only her immediate family but also the wider community.
While financial assistance and welfare support for her children are commendable, no amount of compensation can replace a life lost.
The greatest honour that can be given to her memory is a justice system that holds every responsible individual accountable, regardless of influence, status, or position.
The case has equally become a broader test of public confidence in law enforcement institutions. If credible evidence exists implicating security personnel in either the crime itself or any subsequent cover-up, such allegations must be investigated thoroughly, independently, and without interference.
For many Nigerians, promises of justice have too often faded with time, buried beneath bureaucracy, influence, or public forgetfulness.
This case presents an opportunity for the Kaduna State Government to demonstrate that the rule of law remains stronger than impunity and that justice applies equally to all citizens.
Justice delayed—or worse, denied—would not only fail Ummulkhairi’s family but would also weaken public trust in the institutions designed to protect the people.
